Shopping in Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura’s fun is not just about the sea and the beaches, it is also a great place to shop – whether your idea of great shopping is in a shopping center or an open market. Whatever corner of Fuerteventura you happen to be in, whether it is in the capital Puerto del Rosario, the old capital Bentacuria, Morro Jable or Celeta de Fuste, there is sure to be a nice shopping area near you.
The capital, Puerto del Rosario is home to the largest shopping center in all of the Canary Islands, called Las Rotondas. Las Rotondas is quite easy to locate in Puerto del Rosario, as it is right on your way to the airport. The beauty of shopping at Las Rotondas is its long hours, as it is open until 10 in the evening. Another notable shopping center in Fuerteventura is Las Compario, located at Corralejo. Las Compario is also easy to find, as it is located at the entrance of Corralejo. Las Compario is a new shopping center, and has a variety of shops to cater to every need. The Atlantico shopping center is yet another notable shopping center in Fuerteventura. The center is located at Celeta de Fuste and is a great place to shop for gifts while in Fuerteventura, given its variety of gift shops and jewelers.
The Inspecasa chains have a number of supermarkets you can shop at while in Fuerteventura. Other supermarket chains on the island include stores in the Netto chain and the Hipperdino stores.
If you like the idea of open market shopping, Fuerteventura has a variety of markets for you, including the one at Jandia (where the market day is Thursday), and the one at Corralejo (where market is held on Mondays). For weekend shopping, you can try the market at Costa Lama (held on Sunday) or the market at Caleta de Fuste (held on Saturday.)
There is also the possibility of street shopping at Fuerteventura. Juan de Betancourt Street is a shop-ridden street in Puerto del Rosario where you can get some really great bargains. Morro Jable’s main street also fits into this category as a great place to shop. The beauty of shopping at Morro Jable’s main street is that it caters to tourist, offering many items that they are likely to be looking for. Scheduling your shopping trip may be a little overwhelming, as most shops in Fuerteventura open for a few hours in the morning, then go for a ‘siesta break’ (an extended lunch break,) only to open again later in the afternoon.
There are lots of restaurants – both local and well known international brands, like McDonalds – that help make your shopping trip in Fuerteventura more enjoyable. Most of the modern shops in Fuerteventura do accept credit cards, but it would be a good idea to have a little cash on hand, if you want to enjoy the entire range of shopping opportunities in Fuerteventura.
